The Confessor

Each year I look forward to Daniel Silva's new thriller. The Confessor was worth the wait. After starting off slowly, the novel quickly picks up steam.
As is usual with a suspense novel, there are a few plots to keep track of, three in The Confessor. Though it is hard to remember the various characters at first, they quickly become integral parts of the novel. Silva develops his characters wonderfully. None are faultless, but all are a joy to read about.

The English Assassin

The English Assassin is another fine novel. Daniel Silva provides the reader with his usual blend of action, excitement, intrigue, and plot twists -- all set within the historical context of the secret world of the Swiss banking system from WWII to the present. In a reprise of Gabriel Allon, the art restorer and sometimes Israeli spy from the Kill Artist, Silva spins a tale of a secret Swiss society, long-ago collaboration with Nazi Germany, and a quest to recover art treasures plundered by the Nazi's in WWII. Gabriel is drawn into the plot when he is sent to restore a painting belonging to an elderly Swiss banker. Finding the banker dead, Gabriel is quickly forced to match wits with the mysterious English Assassin and members of the clandestine Swiss organization that seeks to keep the past of Switzerland buried.

Moscow rules

I've only recently discovered Silva's work and I must say I'm impressed. All of his books keep you glued to the page when you should be doing something else. "Moscow Rules" I found to be particularly engaging. Protagonist Gabriel Allon is no superhero. He's just a well-trained, bold, talented agent who is dedicated to doing the right thing.

Darkness at Noon

Darkness at Noon is the most famous novel by Hungarian-born British novelist Arthur Koestler. Published in 1940, it tells the tale of Rubashov, a Bolshevik old guard and 1917 revolutionary who is first cast out and then imprisoned and tried for treason by the Soviet government he once helped create.

The novel is set in 1938 during the Stalinist purges and Moscow show trials. It reflects the author's personal disillusionment with Communism; Koestler knew some of the defendants at the Moscow trials. Although the characters have Russian names, neither Russia nor the Soviet Union are actually mentioned by name as the location of the book. Joseph Stalin is described as "Number One", a barely-seen and menacing totalitarian leader.

CRADLE and ALL

I've read quite a bit of James Patterson -- this book is decidedly different from many that I've read. This is not the usual good guy vs. bad, evil, murderer guy. This is a story about two girls who are pregnant virgins -- one in the US and one in Ireland. It's confirmed that they are indeed "intact" and are virgins.

Hollywood Divorces

HOLLYWOOD DIVORCES is the typical trashy Jackie Collins tale that somehow is fun to read (sort of like the tabloids in a supermarket). The cast for the most part are not a likable group as they are shallow and egotistical except perhaps Shelby who seems naive. The story line is thin yet this reviewer cannot explain why, but once again Ms. Collins hooked me with her latest Hollywood drama.

DEADLY EMBRACE

This book had everything I was looking for in a good read and more. It was so good that I had cut back on most of my activites just to finish it. Once you began reading you WILL NOT be able to put it down. It's fast-paced, exciting, and unpredictable. Michael Castelli/Castellino is the best character ever written. He's everything I wish I could be and more! I hope Collins writes more about him in the future. I am now buying all of Jackie Collins books, cause she has just recieved herself a new loyal fan in me.

The Bitch

THE BITCH is the story of two characters: Nico Constantine who married into wealth at a young age, and Fontaine Al Khaled, who also married into wealth. Both of them are single by the time they meet accidentally on an airplane. Instant attaction....
The novel of course has several subplots weaving in and out, with lots of gratuitous sex and outrageous plot twists. But that's expected from a Jackie Collins novel. Nico finds he's dead broke and spends the rest of the novel trying to get himself out of this mess (big time gambling debt). Fontaine in the meantime is trying to rejuvenate her London night club, while at the same time ignores all advances from Nico, although deep down she is very attracted to him.
For a quick light read and some trashy writing, THE BITCH is recommended.

Lucky begins to track down the odious killer with special plans to enact revenge.

While she is on her quest, other problems arise. Claudia accompanied by a small boy comes from Italy claiming that her child's father is Lucky's husband, a by-product of a one-night stand. Her goddaughter Brigette Stanislopoulos has been raped and fed heroin by her disgusting spouse. As she adds these two situations for super clean up, Lucky must deal with Alex Woods of the DANGEROUS KISS, who wants back into her life.

The Lucky Santangelo tales are all entertaining fun and fluff that turn into a fast reading experience. The fifth entry DANGEROUS KISS is fast-paced, filled with humor, sex, and death. Lucky remains an enjoyable lead character and the returning cast members continue to augment the story line. Jackie Collins provides her fans with a pleasurable tale and anyone who scorns this novel without reading it will miss a fun time.

The book is the first part of a trilogy.[citation needed] The second part is called The Secret Speech and also features the character of Leo Demidov and his wife, Raisa.

Catch-22

Catch-22 is a satirical, historical novel by the American author Joseph Heller, first published in 1961. The novel, set during the later stages of World War II from 1943 onwards, is frequently cited as one of the great literary works of the twentieth century.[2] It has a distinctive non-chronological style where events are described from different characters' points of view and out of sequence so that the time line develops along with the plot.

The Information

The Information is a 1995 novel by British writer Martin Amis. The plot involves two forty year old novelists, Gwyn Barry (successful) and Richard Tull (not so). Amis has asserted that both characters are based (if they can be regarded as based on anybody) on himself. It is, says Amis, a book about "literary enmity".

Gwyn Barry and Richard Tull have been friends since they roomed together at university. Richard Tull was a promising writer with a seemingly bright future. However his career flags and he finds himself depressed writing book reviews for a small literary paper and running a vanity press. To his chagrin, Gwyn Barry - whose literary skills Tull holds in low esteem - has written a phenomenally successful novel and won a lucrative and respected literary prize. Barry begins to enjoy a rarified life whilst Tull toils away with his unsuccessful pursuits.

Tull, increasingly envious, begins to manufacture ways of bringing Barry down. These begin relatively innocently, attempts to cause Barry inconvenience. But later things become much more serious as Tull makes contact with violent men he later finds he cannot control.

Temperance Brennan

Temperance Daesee Brennan is a fictional character created by author Kathy Reichs and is the hero of her crime novel series. She was introduced in Reichs' first novel, Déjà Dead, which was published in 1997. Like her creator, Brennan is a forensic anthropologist, who divides her time between work in North Carolina, and working in Montreal for the Laboratoire des Sciences Judiciaires et de Médecine Légale for the province of Quebec. Brennan is divorced and has a daughter named Katy. Throughout the books, she is constantly meeting with Detective Andrew Ryan and has developed a romance with him.

The character shares the same name with the protagonist of the American television series, Bones, whose character was not based on Reichs' books or the Brennan of her books but rather on the author herself.[1] In the TV series, Temperance Brennan is played by Emily Deschanel.

Brennan makes a cameo appearance in Jasper Fforde's 2007 novel First Among Sequels.

Ulysses

Wikipedia

Ulysses is a novel by James Joyce, first serialized in parts in the American journal The Little Review from March 1918 to December 1920, then published in its entirety by Sylvia Beach on February 2, 1922, in Paris. It is one of the most important works of Modernist literature.

Ulysses chronicles the passage of Leopold Bloom through Dublin during an ordinary day, June 16, 1904. The title parallels and alludes to Odysseus (Latinised into Ulysses), the hero of Homer's Odyssey (e.g., the correspondences between Leopold Bloom and Odysseus, Molly Bloom and Penelope, and Stephen Dedalus and Telemachus). Joyce fans worldwide now celebrate June 16 as Bloomsday.

Ulysses totals about 265,000 words from a vocabulary of 30,030 words (including proper names, plurals and various verb tenses), divided into 18 "episodes". Since publication, the book attracted controversy and scrutiny, ranging from early obscenity trials to protracted textual "Joyce Wars." Ulysses' stream-of-consciousness technique, careful structuring, and experimental prose—full of puns, parodies, and allusions—as well as its rich characterisations and broad humour, made the book a highly regarded novel in the Modernist pantheon. In 1999, the Modern Library ranked Ulysses first on its list of the 100 best English-language novels of the 20th century.
